The Anthony Nolan Trust provides lifesaving donors for patients in need of a bone marrow transplant, including those suffering from leukemia. Founded by Shirley Nolan in 1974 following the diagnosis of her son, Anthony, with a rare condition that could only be treated by a bone marrow transplant. Stunning Cup Victory Shows Oundle’s Potential

by Staff Writer, December 1, 2007

To call Oundle Town Football Club’s start to the Marshall Peterborough and District Football League season abysmal, would be an understatement. With various managerial changes, sitting rock bottom of the table and still yet to even win three points, the last thing they needed was a cup tie with league leaders, Whittlesey United.

Whittlesey came to Station Road full of confidence, looking down on every other team in the Peugeot Premier Division. Earlier on in the season Oundle were on the receiving end of a thumping 11-0 thrashing at home to Whittlesey. This time they were ready and were not going to let the team from Peterborough breeze through to the quarter finals with ease.

Convenience Competes with Loyalty

by Staff Writer,

It has been 15 years since the Co-op opened in Oundle. Despite receiving a very mixed welcome at that time, independently-owned shops such as Trendalls, Oundle News and the Bakery had continued success, and the majority of Oundle still rely on these shops for many of their needs. Why, then, are many people still angry about the instalment of a Tesco?

The new Tesco is not like the Co-op. It is not a supermarket, hence the “Express” interjection; rather it is a miniature store of indulgence. For example, there is a copious variety of chocolate cakes and bars, crisp packets and sugary soft drinks. If you are around in the market and are determined on saving a few pennies, Tescos provides a fine replacement for the late One Stop and sadly, in many cases, the independently-owned stores.

Wine Tasting at Amps

by Staff Writer,

The annual winter wine tasting hosted by Amps Fine Wines on November the 16th was a fantastic learning experience, as well as a lot of fun. The hall was filled with fifteen tables, each manned by an expert, and laid out with five to ten different drinks and a plate of crackers, offering a choice of over a hundred delicious wines and liquors to try.

My evening kicked off with New World wines; a South African white wine, the Chenin Blanc Groote Post 2006 at £6.99, which was an excellent wine to start with. Light and crisp, it is “the best white wine in its price bracket”, according to Rachel Longstaff from Louis Latour Agencies. The South African Chenin Blanc False Bay 2007 was a beautifully fresh and spicy white wine and certainly deserving of the Amps award for New World Wine of the Year for Under £6. If you’ve heard of or enjoyed the very popular Cloudy Bay wines then you would enjoy the Three Amigos White McHenry Hohnen 2005 which is made by the same owner. It’s an Australian wine made with an unusual blend of three French grapes and although slightly more expensive at £11.50, it’s definitely worth it.
