Football Club Face Crisis

by Rory Briggs, September 23, 2009

Oundle manager Dan Dobson admits things have got to change at the rock-bottom Premier Division club – and fast.

Dobson fears the worst, only eight games into his first season at the helm. Oundle are yet to pick up a point, and were smashed 6-0 by fellow strugglers Stamford Bels on Saturday.

Now Dobson is bidding to bring a struggling Oundle first team and a successful reserve side closer together at a critical club meeting later this week. Should that not happen, he admits he may consider his future.

Dobson said: “I hate to say it, but I’m struggling to even see where a point is going to come from.

“Stamford Bels were better than us and it was the usual story of conceding a couple of goals and things getting worse from there.

“The really frustrating thing is that we had a very good pre-season, in which we ran a lot of United Counties League sides close, but each week we are missing two or three players and I need the lads to be committed to turn this around.

“I believe in myself and half-a-dozen of the players we have at the club. But there are weaknesses elsewhere and mistakes are always punished at this level, which is why we find ourselves in this position.

“I am doing everything I can to try to attract players, but it is not an easy job when we are losing every game and struggling at the bottom of the league.

“It is not any good having a reserve team winning their league if the first team is relegated, and both those things are a possibility at this moment in time. If things don’t change at the club then I may have to call it a day.”

Adam Elliott and Ricky Pozella both got on the score sheet with Sean Edwards and substitute Rhys Ford also finding the net as Bels hit form in some style.

Jon Morley, who took charge of the Stamford side with boss Martin Conneely on holiday, said, “We were really focused for a change and produced a very good performance.

“I think we would have given anyone a game in this sort of mood, but one win doesn’t mean we are a good side all of a sudden. Everyone now has the belief we can now build on this result and continue to get better as a team.”
