17 Year Old Dies But Saves Three

by Max Johnson, September 23, 2009

Justin Luckins was only 17 when his Vauxhall Corsa left the road, hitting a tree, just outside Brigstock this past August. Justin was days away from getting his AS level results, and had just started work as a part-time lifeguard at Corby.

Justin had studied Information and Communication studies and Business studies at The Kingswood School in Corby. On results day it was revealed that he had passed both of his AS level exams.

When Justin started work at Corby’s new multi-million pound international pool, he said it had always been his dream to save someone’s life. He had recently passed his driving test and had opted to also receive an Organ Donor’s card.

His parents were devastated by the news. His father, Roy said, “He was our beautiful boy. Our two other sons, Ryan and Roy have lost a beautiful brother. In the last few years, how he had matured as a young man had been beautiful to see. We treated him to the newest Vauxhall Corsa we could get.

“He had just started work at the swimming pool. It was a very proud moment seeing him going out for the interview. We were so proud when he got the job.

“He played basketball at school and also enjoyed rollerblading. He had a wonderful smile. He enjoyed life so much. We don’t even know half of his friends who have contacted us.”

Mrs Luckins said, “He was a modest boy. He didn’t even tell us he had won a sixth-form basketball tournament. We didn’t really know he had so many friends until now. He was a level-headed, sensible lad.”

Over 1500 people have paid their respects on the social networking site Facebook, joining groups dedicated to the memory of Justin. Corby pool also closed its doors for the afternoon on August 28 out of respect for the lifeguard. Family and friends laid flowers and tributes to Justin outside the pool.

Some local residents have cited visibility problems as the main reason for the crash, with an officer also saying that nine people had been killed on that road in last ten years.

Following Justin’s death, three people’s lives were saved thanks to his Organ Donor’s card.

Toni-Maria Bradshaw wrote, “You can’t pick your family but if we could, we would all pick you again and again. It’s so hard to believe you are gone but I will forever cherish the moments spent with you. It’s clear you have made a change to so many people and I feel blessed to have known you.”
