The Hidden Path of Lilford

by Staff Writer, June 10, 2009

Between Wadenhoe and Oundle, there is a path hidden deep in the Northamptonshire countryside. This three-mile long path connects the two towns, starting off on a north-easterly direction from Pilton Road in Wadenhoe. This path saves the walker two crossings of the busy and dangerous A605, which is always a hazardous area for walkers.

However, this path is hidden in more ways than one. Athough it is just like any other public path, it has not been recognised as one in its entirety, and so does not fully appear on modern OS maps. A section of the path is currently missing from the maps, because a recent reorganisation of the maps led to it being left out. This section runs through some woodland to the historic area of Lilford, making the complete path both scenic and useful, providing a safe passage away from the A605.

While there are many who want this path reopened, there is a stubborn problem, largely due to the lack of cooperation from the landowner, a Channel Islands company, which is refusing to facilitate access.

Mr. Will Lovell, Vice-Chairman of the Higham Ferrers Footpath Group, is doing all he can to push for the Hidden Path of Lilford to be put back on the map, with the help of the Ramblers’ Association. He has so far been able to convince the Northamptonshire County Council to support his cause, but is yet to make headway in convincing the landowners.
