Skiing Success for Local Star

by Staff Writer, June 10, 2009

Jessica Anderson, the young skiing sensation from Oundle, reached a new career high when she took the top prize in the British Alpine Championships, the final competition of the ski season.

The competition, which is held in Meribel in France, attracts hundreds of competitors from all over the United Kingdom, each contending for the top prize. Eleven year old Jessica clinched the title from over forty other competitors, competing in the “Mini” category where she finished first and second in her two races.

Afterwards, Jessica said, “I am delighted to have won the British title as I have worked all season to achieve this result. I knew it was going to be the hardest two races I have competed in, but to get a second and first was just about perfect.

“What makes my first place result even better was that out of 98 boys and girls racing, my time was second quickest overall. One boy beat the time.”

The King’s Cliffe Middle School pupil was introduced to the sport at the tender age of two and a half, and now skis for the Sno!Zone Xscape racing team, based in Milton Keynes. She was even partly named by her parents after the famous French ski resort, Tignes, making her full name Jessica Tignes Anderson. Her skiing prowess has gone from strength to strength, and her ultimate ambition to win Olympic Gold for Britain becomes more and more likely as time goes on. Her talents, however, are not just restricted to skiing, as she is also an adept cyclist and swimmer, and is also currently going for a brown belt in karate!

Jessica started this season with success, competing in January in the Anglo-Scottish Cup, held in Les Houches, France, and winning the Bairns female race. She had an equally successful season last year, collecting a handful of titles by winning the European, British and Scottish Indoor Ski Championships.

She now has a few weeks off until the start of the summer indoor race season, where she will be competing for the next four months in her new age group.
