Dining At The Chapel

by Rory Briggs, June 10, 2009

Oundle’s latest restaurant has arrived in the form of the Chapel Bar & Dining room. The restaurant, which opened in late April, boasts a fine array of diverse dishes. The lunch time menu offers selections from both Mediterranean and English traditions, including an Italian Tuscan Bean Soup with toasted Ciabatta and the English favourite of braised lamb shank with mashed potato and green beans.

Chef Haydn Laidlow describes the cuisine as: ‘Modern British, Mediterranean simple, honest food where the quality of the ingredients speaks for itself ‘. The lunchtime menu includes of a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches made with homemade white and granary bread. All the ingredients are sourced locally where possible, with the meat coming from Seven Wells Butchers in Oundle.

The evening’s menu offers a range of choices that are sophisticated and diverse, such as beef bresola, foie gras and parmesan risotto with asparagus to start; and rump of lamb, rib-eye steak and potato gnocchi with basil pesto for second courses. Desserts include lemon curd, raspberry cheesecake, warm dark chocolate fondant and a fantastic cheese selection. As one would expect, on Sundays there is an assortment of roasts available. Their special lunch offer features two courses for £16.50 or three courses for £21.50.

The chapel’s striking stained glass window creates an eclectic ambiance, combining the perfect blend of contemporary and traditional, making it an ideal environment with which to dine with friends or family. The new restaurant completes the refurbishment of The Bazaar on West Street, also home to Palmer’s Chocolate Shop and the lingerie boutique, Eve.
