Pupils Head to Florida For Science Conference

by Staff Writer, January 14, 2009

Two Oundle residents from Oundle School attended the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in Orlando, Florida on 29th November.

As part of the conference, Jacob Dillarstone, 16, and Nicolas Kernick, 17, participated in the Future Leader’s Pavilion, in which secondary school students from all over the world demonstrate technical projects. This is the third time Oundle has taken part in this prestigious event. Nicolas and Jacob’s project was based on the mathematical concept of the “Queuing Theory”, which looks at cost efficiency against speed of process.

Nicolas and Jacob, who were chosen to attend the conference for their dedication to science, commented, “The I/ITSEC trip provided us with an insight into cutting edge technological scientific developments as well as allowed us to get involved in a huge international conference in a warm part of the world! Our project, revolving around queuing theory, is a real eye opener into just how useful this part of science can be in everyday life. We have enjoyed working on it and hope that others enjoyed hearing about it.”

Initiated in 1966 as the Naval Training Device Centre/Industry Conference, the I/ITSEC conference has evolved and expanded through increased participation by the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Industry. The conference promotes cooperation among the Armed Services, Industry, Academia and various Government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multiservice programs.
