Cinema Screenings

by Isobel Thompson, October 8, 2008

This autumn looks promising for cinema with the Stahl Theatre hosting a series of films, suitable for all ages and tastes. Impeccably chosen, these films promise a great end to the week and are being screened at 8pm on Sunday evenings at only £5 a ticket.

Viewers are in for a treat on the 12th October. Lars and the Real Girl, a comedy about love and acceptance in a tightly knit Christian community. Written by Nancy Oliver, the highly acclaimed creator of Six Feet Under, the film explores society’s treatment of those who are different. The film centres on Lars, who was deserted at childhood and is afraid of human interaction and his girlfriend Bianca, who turns out to be not a human, but a life-sized doll.

The 19th October is the screening of Son of Rambow, a film by the man behind A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The film in set in 1980’s suburbia and follows the story of two children and their quest to make a home-movie. The two strong performances from the starring roles ensure that the slapstick elements of Son of Rambow combine with the serious messages behind the film to produce a hilarious yet highly thought provoking and insightful film.

The next film is on 9 November. Happy-go-Lucky is a light film following the story of a girl called Poppy and the encounters in her life. Persepolis will be on 6 December. Persepolis makes for an interesting film because it is in animation. It is about a girl and her transition into womanhood in both Iran and Europe. This film was the winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, 2007.

The last film to be shown on Sunday 14th December is Sex and the City. Those who have missed their regular fix of Carrie’s outrageous outfits and Samantha’s outrageous exploits will not be disappointed in this fabulous, light-hearted and frivolous film. The Stahl is guaranteed to be full, not only with women, but with men too, who are there under the pretence of being dragged along by their wives.
