National Women’s Register Stays Relevent

by Staff Writer, July 1, 2008

On 5th April 2008 about 100 members of the National Women’s Register met at Oundle School Sixth Form Club for a talk by Peter Barratt on his great-grandmother Alice Hawkins, who was a prime mover in the Suffragette movement.

Alice first attended a meeting for the Women’s Social and Political Union, commonly known as the Suffragette, in 1907 and was subsequently involved in campaigning for women’s rights. Alice was born in Leicester to a working class family; she left school at 13 to join the shoe factory where she was angered by the fact that women were paid less and their work was considered inferior to that of men.

Organised by the Northampton Motorcyclists Club, the Wild & Woolly Scramble takes place on Boxing Day at Arm Farm in Blisworth.

The race lasts for an hour, during which the riders face multiple river crossings and all the ensuing mayhem that these create. It is usually a muddy and messy affair, and there is little doubt that 2008 will be any exception. Sam Smith currently holds the record for the most wins, with seven, although Ryan Griffiths, who currently has six wins, will be looking to equal that record this year.

Stamford College Old Boys :19

Oundle started the game at a real intense pace and were 28 points to the good in as many minutes. The most impressive being a hat trick from Joe Rice in the first 20 minutes. Four minutes in he made an excellent break through some weak tackling and crossed under the posts. Lee Green converted easily. Continued…
