Oundle Ready to Give to Christian Aid

by Staff Writer, July 1, 2008

Last year, the people of Oundle dug deep into their pockets and wallets to raise around £7000 pounds for Christian Aid. This was a tremendous effort for a town the size of Oundle and all the donations made were hugely appreciated. However, can Oundle do better this year? I recently met with Eleanor Rayden, who works for Chrstian Aid, to find out more.

For the past 60 years, Christian Aid has made hope a reality, helping in countries all over the world. Its main aims are to reduce poverty and give the poor as much of an opportunity to turn their lives around as they can. Christian Aid Week is from the 11th to the 17th of May and gives people around the globe a chance to show their backing to one of the world largest charities. People from any religion can donate and huge fund raising events all over the world take place, including music acts, bike rides and book signing. Recently, Christian Aid runners made a staggering £50,000 running in the London marathon, outlining the dedication and will Christian Aid requires.

In Oundle itself, there are red slips that are passed through all doors, mainly before and during the week. Donations of all sizes are given, with the average person giving from one to two pounds. However much money you give, it all goes to a very good cause. Emergencies make up thirty percent of the fund’s use; with forty precent given to projects that are long term. Campaigning, education and governance make up the further thirty precent, as Christian Aid tries to cover as many areas possible. St. Peters Parish Church will be taking donations during the week and will have people standing on the doors before and after the services ready to take any money you are willing to donate. Even spare change can make a massive difference. Chrstian Aid works strongly in the third world regions, especially the poverty stricken countries across Africa.

Overall, this year’s Christian Aid is expecting to be a great success once again. With the generosity of Oundle’s residents, the target of beating £7000 should be reachable! So get ready to fill your red slips!
