For twelve years Volunteer Action has been servicing the local community. This unique and selfless service allows many elderley and disadvantaged people to maintain their independence and their quality of life. Volunteer Action help a staggering 550 people with transport to and from essential outlets such as doctors, dentists, hospitals and shops. The volunteer drivers cover about 70,000 miles a year and provide a neccesary relief from the difficulty of public transport for the elderley and disadvantaged people. Residents of thirty-two villages surrounding Oundle benefit from the scheme. Without it they would be forced to spend a great deal of money on transport.

You may have spotted Tatty running along West Street or elsewhere in Oundle over recent months, but what you may not have realised was that she was training for the daunting task of running the London Marathon. Tatty Bullard, an Oundelian, was the youngest competitor in this year’s London Marathon at the age of 18 and 6 days, completing the route in a highly commendable four hours and forty-four minutes.

How many of you notice the bell ringing in Oundle town? The answer is probably quite a lot of you and quite rightly so, for they are a pinnacle part of rural town life. Unbelievable now, but there was once a time when people would have depended on them even more for not only spreading the word of Christianity, but also keeping people informed about events, such as church services and the opening time for the market. Take any good Jane Austen or Thomas Hardy novel and they will all include the bell ringing.

Oundle police are set to tackle loutish and antisocial behaviour in Oundle as their primary objective, after surveys illustrated an overwhelming desire for this issue to be tackled. However, there is far more to solving this problem than a presence on the streets, and this in itself can even have a negative impact
