Stunning Cup Victory Shows Oundle’s Potential

by Staff Writer, December 1, 2007

To call Oundle Town Football Club’s start to the Marshall Peterborough and District Football League season abysmal, would be an understatement. With various managerial changes, sitting rock bottom of the table and still yet to even win three points, the last thing they needed was a cup tie with league leaders, Whittlesey United.

Whittlesey came to Station Road full of confidence, looking down on every other team in the Peugeot Premier Division. Earlier on in the season Oundle were on the receiving end of a thumping 11-0 thrashing at home to Whittlesey. This time they were ready and were not going to let the team from Peterborough breeze through to the quarter finals with ease.

“Oundle is a Jewel”

by Staff Writer,

Louise Bagshawe is the conservative candidate who will be running against Phil Hope. After studying English at Oxford, she was a marketing person for Sony Records, before giving up her job to pursue a career as an author. She has since published many successful books, including Career Girls and Glamour. Inspired to become a politician by Lady Margaret Thatcher, she has been involved in politics since she was twelve. She briefly joined the Labour Party because she originally thought that Tony Blair actually represented Conservative issues, but disappointed in him, she rejoined the Conservative Party in 1997. She was posted on the Conservative A-list ahead of the next general election.

During the Oundle Chronicle interview, Louise said she wants to “work on getting Northants a fair deal from central government. Under Labour the county is constantly short-changed.” She predicts that the Conservative Party will win the next election, and take advantage of the “Rubbish” leadership of Gordon Brown. “Under Brown the Conservatives have hit 15 year highs in the polls.”

Convenience Competes with Loyalty

by Staff Writer,

It has been 15 years since the Co-op opened in Oundle. Despite receiving a very mixed welcome at that time, independently-owned shops such as Trendalls, Oundle News and the Bakery had continued success, and the majority of Oundle still rely on these shops for many of their needs. Why, then, are many people still angry about the instalment of a Tesco?

The new Tesco is not like the Co-op. It is not a supermarket, hence the “Express” interjection; rather it is a miniature store of indulgence. For example, there is a copious variety of chocolate cakes and bars, crisp packets and sugary soft drinks. If you are around in the market and are determined on saving a few pennies, Tescos provides a fine replacement for the late One Stop and sadly, in many cases, the independently-owned stores.

OPS School dinners

by Staff Writer,

Oundle Primary School has introduced school dinners, decades after the school had converted the kitchen into a class room. The head teacher, Janet McMurdo, said that the school introduced the scheme after parents began to ask why school dinners were not available. A questionnaire was sent out and it was discovered that a large number of parents did want their children to have school dinners because it was more convenient than making a packed lunch every day. Parents, children and staff all think the scheme is wonderful.

The children are given a choice of a cooked meal or packed lunch, which they are allowed to vary from day to day. The meals, which are catered for by Kingfishers Catering in Corby, offer a wide choice each day. It caters for allergies, vegetarians and all food preferences, offering healthy food and a balanced diet. Children can choose from a main course or vegetarian option, vegetables or salad with a carbohydrate a jacket potato with filling. They can also choose from a choice of pudding or fresh fruit and drink.
